Junta viernes: Meeting Friday
There will be another meeting of Paz Sin Fronteras on Friday, April 20 at 6:30 pm at the Goleta Valley Community Center, room 6. Please come and bring your ideas, skills, and resources to help us plan the best Children's Day ever!
Habrá otra reunión de Paz Sin Fronteras este viernes, el 20 de abril a las 6:30 en el Centro Comunitario del Valle de Goleta, salón 6. ¡Favor de venir y traer sus ideas, destrezas, y recursos para ayudarnos a planear el mejor Día del Niño qu jamás se ha visto!

Junta mañana: Meeting tomorrow
No se olviden de que mañana habrá junta en el Centro Comunitario del Valle de Goleta, salón 6 de las 6:30 hasta las 8 de la noche. El centro está colocado en 5679 Hollister Ave, Goleta, California 93117. Esta junta está abierta a todos los que quieren ayudarnos a planear y organizar para el Día del Niño y el Día del Trabajo.

Día del Niño
En México, se celebra el Día del Niño el 30 de abril. El día siguiente, se honora al trabajador mundialmente con el Día Internacional del Trabajador. A nosotros nos pareció una buena oportunidad para hacer actividades educativas y divertidas para los niños que a la vez prepararían para los eventos del Día del Trabajo.
Vamos a combinar elementos de la celebración tradicional–juegos, comida, y arte–con actividades de conciencia política y social.
Lugar: Sunken Gardens
Hora: del mediodía hasta las cuatro de la tarde (12:00-4:00 pm)
Fecha: Domingo, el 29 de abril, 2007 (el día antes del Día del Niño)
Traigan a sus familias. ¡Ahí nos vemos!
Children's Day is a holiday that is celebrated on different days throughout the world. In México, it is celebrated on April 30th. (In the United States, it isn't celebrated at all!) The next day is International Workers' Day, known in México as el Día del Trabajo (Labor Day). It seemed to us like a good opportunity to put on fun and educational activities for children that would simultaneously help us prepare for the events of May Day.
We'll be combining elements of the traditional Día de los Niños celebration–games, food, and art–with politically- and socially-conscious activities.
Where: Sunken Gardens
When: From twelve to four pm (12:00-4:00 pm)
Date: Sunday, April 30, 2007 (the day before Children's Day)
Bring your families. See you there!

Quienes Somos: Who We Are
¿Quiénes somos?
Somos un grupo independiente que se formó a partir de la marcha anti-guerra en Santa Bárbara el 17 de marzo 2007. Después de la manifestación, se llevaron a cabo varios talleres con enfoques diferentes. Entre ellos, hubo un taller que se trataba de los efectos de la guerra sobre la población latina.
Discutimos el reclutamiento de los jóvenes latinos para el ejército y el hecho de que los reclutadores ofrecen la ciudadanía a los jóvenes sin cumplir esa promesa. Hablamos de la manera en que se usa la "guerra contra el terror" como un pretexto para ataques sobre los inmigrantes y para quitarnos nuestros derechos laborales, y como la pérdida de las libertades civiles afecta más gravemente a los inmigrantes que a los cuidadanos. Discutimos el hecho de que los recursos que se gastan el la guerra podrían estar beneficiando a nuestras comunidades si fueran invertidas en la educación y el cuidado de salud. Hablamos de como se juzgan a los jóvenes como adultos en casos criminales bajo el pretexto de que la violencia pandillera es "terrorística." Y finalmente, vimos que existe una fuerza en la solidaridad, y que los movimientos pueden alcanzar mejor sus metas apoyándose el uno al otro.
Por eso decidimos hacer todo lo posible para unir el movimiento pro-inmigrante con el movimiento anti-guerra, y de seguir reuniéndonos para hacer un cambio en nuestra comunidad.
Who are we?
We are an independent group that was formed after the Santa Barbara anti-war march of March 17, 2007. After the demonstration, there was a series of workshops, each with a different focus. One of those workshops centered on the effects of the war on Latinos.
We discussed the military recruitment of young Latinos, and the way recruiter offer citizenship to undocumented youth without fulfilling that promise. We talked about how the "War of Terror" is used as a pretext to attack immigrants and to take away labor rights, and how the loss of civil liberties affects immigrants more than it does citizens. We talked about how the resources that are being used to fight wars would be put to better use investing in the health and education of our community. We considered the unjust trial of young offenders as adults when gang violence is painted as "terrorism." And finally, we talked about the strength that comes about from solidarity, and how the two movements can more easily reach their goals if they support one another.
That's why we decided to do everything possible to unite the anti-war and immigrant rights movements, and to keep on meeting in order to make a positive change in our community.
